
Here was a law which could be put into effect and passed without the man being visible or audible. He gave the sign and the law came out, but how? At that time we had been at a conclave of American Quakers on a conference tour, and we had heard that the measure of substance I had mentioned in 1851-52 had been adopted by some Quakers in New York. We were anxious to meet the Quakers and hear of the result. Soon, however, we got a telegram, and there was our answer. If the law was passed with all the stakes driven in, when the lickspittle brother, giving himself up for dead, was revived all the stakes would be gone. A remarkable experiment! This, however, was not to be depended on if you meant to make the ordinary masses of men see the ordinary extraordinary, a practical, ordinary law. The little trail led to ancient books in which all this was described, and at this I spoke with the man at the bullioner's store. He gave me the names of books by the occult man Mather; they were several volumes in his library. But the ultimate conclusion was made from the most ordinary book in the world: if we were to make a law without consulting anybody, there was only one man we could consult, and that was the Divine. We could make the law, but not be the law!
But I had an intuition. I stood in a crowd of men going down in an omnibus at night on the Champs-Elysées, and I could sense the lives of many at that time. There were as many idiots as patriots; I could feel them all about. I knew what they could be taught or what thought they would never conceive. They could be hypnotised, but no one could make them believe anything, nor could they die for the world as would befit patriots or any man of religion. This went on through several years. I wanted to study the universal law, which was the limitation of our subject. I heard nothing but the commonplace; to this day, I hear little different than it.
If you want to see the best and not the worst, put the two together.
There was one truth but not two; two must be an exaggeration. I had shown you the foundation of this truth before in 1793 and then it came out in 1793 with the revolutions; it came out again in 1795 with the Pardon of Pernambuco, with the massacres of 1817. It came out in 1822 in the Paris Commune; it came out in 1848; it came out in 1866; it came out in 1871. This is the secret; it's the present, and will be the future. Of all the modern minds, only the Russian great ones are aware of it. They have had it in their guts and in their hearts all the time. I learned this as a priest and used it only once. Now we are in need of it. This is the secret of victory. I met the most moderate and powerful man on the planet. He was not a Russian nor a Chinese but a Macedonian, who was the most extensive and most interesting naturalistic scientist of all time. He had been married three times, had had twenty-three children, and yet all his children were faithful to him. All his sons, too, and many of his daughters, had been priests and all the sons and daughters, too, were dedicated to God. This, as you see, is a unique family of the most extreme Christianity. They believed in angels, which they said were not devils as they are commonly believed but God, at the very moment when they had the first proof of His existence. Yet they didn't regard Satan as a bad spirit: this they understood very well, because he had done many evil things but knew he was the devil. It was as if Satan was only a little bit more degenerate than God; and he had shown this degeneracy in those two acts, which were done with the view of saving the world. He saved it from the loss of America and from the paganism of Russia; he saved it from the blasphemies, the unbelief, and the slavery which went on so long, with this one incalculable crime; he brought people back to God and they were the best people on earth; the liberation came in the year of 1917 when he was destined to do so, when he had planned for it. And now, as you see, the liberation is happening again, at the very moment when the evil spirits anticipated, for such a long time, a good present time and a good future. You might well see the devil as the American; the evil spirit as the Pope; and the good spirit as Russia. Yet you see all that you see, for, of all the men and women who read, it is they who make the choice in this world. But those who read as equals in the spirit of brotherhood, the greatest spiritual liberators in all time, they will change it: they know what they are doing; they are not dogmatic; they are in control of their choice. At present, the belief of the Americans is that they are on the right and those other peoples are on the wrong. The choice of the Russian people is that they are right and the other peoples are wrong. This shows who is the most sensible person in all the world.
And you shall see more of these spiritual influences, I promise you, in what I shall say to you next. On this issue, you shall know more, I know: I have seen it all. You shall see that the satanic plans of our forefathers in the Temple of the Father and of the Son have also begun to manifest themselves in this present world; and you shall see that what they foresaw, and what they have come to bring into existence, is far beyond anything that had existed in all previous world-souls. And you will discover that all this came to be as the foretold result of the lives of the Baal of Peor and the Baal of Dagon and the lives of their highest priests.
